The Banyan Tree Park
SHADING MORE THAN TWO THIRDS OF AN ACRE, measuring nearly one-fourth of a mile in circumference and reaching upward to a height of of 60 feet, The Banyan Tree has been a Lahaina landmark for more than fourteen decades. The tree has spread over area via arial roots, which when they reach the ground, grow into thick trunks.  The Lahaina Banyan Tree is the largest in the state of Hawaii.

It was planted on April 24, 1873 by the sheriff of Lahaina, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Lahainas firs Protestant Christian Mission. Every evening the Banyan Tree becomes the roosting place for most of the local MYNAH BIRD population. At sun down the tree comes alive with the tunes of thousands of these birds.

Local girl tip: You might want to wear some sleeves to protect you from the flies and the falling fruit. The fruit is globes, rose red and about one half inch in diameter.
